Hard Water in Luton and What It Does to Your Hair

If your hair feels dull and heavy no matter what you do, there is a good chance it is not your shampoo. It is your water.
Luton sits in one of the hardest water areas in the UK. That means high levels of calcium and magnesium in the water supply. And it is doing things to your hair that most people do not even realise.
What Hard Water Actually Does
Minerals from hard water build up on your hair over time. You cannot see it, but you can feel it. Hair gets a coating that makes it feel rough, look flat, and lose its shine. It is like a film sitting on every strand.
If you have ever noticed your hair looks better when you wash it on holiday somewhere with soft water, that is why.
It Messes With Colour Too
Hard water mineral deposits can make blonde hair go brassy or green-tinged. They can make colour fade faster and take unevenly. If you have ever had a colour service that did not look quite right despite your stylist doing everything properly, hard water might be the reason.
What You Can Do at Home
A clarifying shampoo once a fortnight strips the mineral build-up. It is not a daily shampoo, just a reset every couple of weeks. Your normal shampoo and conditioner go on top of that.
An apple cider vinegar rinse works too. A tablespoon in a mug of water, pour it through after shampooing, leave it a minute, rinse. It dissolves mineral deposits and closes the cuticle. Your hair will feel noticeably smoother.
Shower filters exist too. They screw onto your shower head and filter out some of the minerals. They are not expensive and they do make a difference, especially if your hair is colour-treated.
What We Do in the Salon
We know about the water here. We factor it into our colour work and product recommendations. If you are finding it hard to keep your colour looking fresh between appointments, mention it when you come in. There might be a simple tweak to your home routine that sorts it.
It is one of those local things that most salons do not talk about because it is not glamorous. But it matters.
