Good hair extensions last anywhere from three months to a year, depending on the type you get and how well you look after them. The catch most people miss is that there are really two clocks running. One is how long the hair itself stays in good nick. The other is how often your fittings need moving up as your own hair grows. So when someone asks me how long extensions last, I always ask which one they mean.

The short version

Tape extensions: moved up every 6 to 8 weeks, hair reusable for around 6 months.

Nano rings: moved every 8 to 10 weeks, hair lasts up to a year.

Weft extensions: moved every 6 to 8 weeks, hair can last up to a year.

Good quality human hair lasts. Cheap synthetic hair does not.

Care is the difference: gentle brushing, heat protection, the right products.

Two questions hiding in one

When you ask how long extensions last, you are really asking two things at once. How long will the hair look good, and how often will I need to come back in. They are not the same thing, and mixing them up is where the confusion starts.

The hair is the bit you buy. The fitting is the bit that holds it in. Your own hair keeps growing at around half an inch a month, so the bonds or wefts slowly drop away from your roots. That growing out has nothing to do with the quality of the hair itself. It just means the attachment point needs resetting.

How long each type of extension lasts

Tape extensions are the quickest to fit and the gentlest on your budget, at £60 to £70 an hour with us. The tapes need moving up every 6 to 8 weeks as your hair grows. The hair itself, if it is good quality Remy human hair, can be re-taped and worn again for around 6 months before it starts to look tired.

Nano rings, at £55 an hour, are the finest attachment we do, tiny beads clamped near the root with no glue or heat. They sit comfortably for 8 to 10 weeks between maintenance, and because there is nothing harsh holding them in, the hair often lasts 9 to 12 months with good care.

Wefts, at £70 to £80 an hour, are a row of hair sewn or beaded onto a track across your head. They give the most volume and tend to be the longest lasting. Expect to have them moved up every 6 to 8 weeks, with the actual hair going strong for up to a year.

Across all three, the single biggest factor is the hair you start with. Proper Remy human hair keeps its cuticle intact and behaves like your own. Cheap synthetic or non-Remy hair tangles and dulls within weeks, no matter how carefully you treat it. That is why I will never fit budget hair. It is a false economy and it shows.

What makes them last, and what wrecks them

Extensions live or die by aftercare. The clients whose hair still looks lovely at the ten week mark are the ones brushing gently from the ends up with a proper extension brush, using heat protection every single time, and keeping heavy oils away from the bonds.

The thing to watch is tension. Extensions that are too heavy for your natural hair, or left in far too long without moving up, pull on the roots and can cause a type of hair loss called traction alopecia. The American Academy of Dermatology explains how tight, pulling styles damage hair over time, and it is exactly why we weight your extensions to your own hair and stick to the maintenance schedule.

Sleeping on wet hair, skipping your maintenance appointments and dragging a brush through knots are the fastest ways to shorten their life. Look after them and you get every penny back. Neglect them and even the best hair will not see you through.
