Long hair over 40: why the old rules do not apply

There is no age at which you are supposed to cut your hair short. Long hair over 40 works on most women who want it, and when it stops working the problem is nearly always condition rather than age. The bob-at-40 rule came out of magazines. It has never been how stylists actually think about a cut.
The short version
No age rule exists. Long hair over 40 is a condition question.
Hair does get finer with age. Density drops, texture changes, growth slows.
Menopause and perimenopause thin hair for many women. The NHS lists it.
Weight and shape matter more than length. Take out bulk, keep inches.
Trim every 8 to 12 weeks to hold the length you have.
What actually changes about your hair after 40
Individual strands get finer. Most women do not lose the number of hairs they had at 25, but each one comes through with a smaller diameter, so the whole head reads as thinner in the mirror. Growth slows down at the same time, which is why length takes so much longer to recover from a cut you did not want.
Hormones do most of the work here. The NHS lists hair thinning as a symptom of menopause and perimenopause, right alongside the symptoms everybody already knows about. If your hair changed noticeably in your forties and nothing in your routine changed with it, that is usually your answer.
Texture shifts too. Hair that was poker straight at 30 can start coming through with a bend in it, and hair that was curly can loosen off. That is normal, and it changes what your old cut does on you even though the cut itself has not changed.
Condition is what people are reacting to
When someone says long hair ages you, what they are looking at is dry, see-through ends on hair that has been kept at one length for years. The hair near the root can be in perfectly good shape while the last four inches have been through three summers, a lot of heat and several colour appointments.
That is fixable. We take the dead weight off the ends and put shape back through the middle. The same length then reads as deliberate instead of neglected, and nobody is looking at your age when they look at your hair.
The cut that makes long hair over 40 work
Long hair over 40 needs weight taken out in the right places rather than length taken off the bottom. Long layers through the mid-lengths give movement without costing you the length you have spent two years growing. A softer piece around the face does more for a jawline than any amount of overall length removed.
If your hair has genuinely thinned, flip that advice. Heavy layering on fine hair makes the ends look sparse and stringy. We keep a stronger baseline through the bottom and take movement only from the top sections, so the perimeter still looks solid.
A cut and finish is £42 to £55. A restyle, where we are properly changing the shape rather than maintaining it, is £60. If you are not sure which one you need, book the cut and finish and we will tell you honestly in the chair before we start.
Colour when you are keeping the length
Grey at the root is the other thing that gets blamed on length. A root tint is £40 to £47 and covers it fully. If you would rather grow into your grey than fight it, balayage handles the transition better than a block colour, because it breaks up the hard line where new growth meets old.
Full balayage is £70 to £85 and a half head is £55 to £65. Most clients keeping long hair also come in for a toner refresh between colour appointments, which is £35 to £40 on its own or £20 added to another service. On long hair that single step does more for the finish than anything else on the price list.
How often to book
Every 8 to 12 weeks for a trim if you are holding length. Leave it much longer and the splits start climbing up the shaft, which eventually costs you more inches than regular trims ever would have.
A blow dry is £28 to £35 and a curly blow dry is £30 to £38. Plenty of our long-haired clients book a blow dry before something specific rather than a full appointment, and that is a sensible use of an hour.
