New Year, New Hair? What to Think About Before a Big Change

New year, new hair is a lovely idea, but a big change works far better when you plan it than when you walk in on a whim. Before you book, get clear on three things: how much upkeep you actually want, what your hair can handle right now, and whether you are changing your hair or changing your life. Here is how I talk it through with my clients.

The short version

A big change is easier to plan than to reverse.

Bleach and bold colour need more upkeep, not less.

Book a consultation first, not on the day of your appointment.

Bring photos you love and one you do not.

Patch test 48 hours before any new colour.

New year new hair, without the regret

The new year gets people thinking about a fresh start, and hair is the easiest thing to change about yourself. That is exactly why it catches people out. A big change feels bold in January and awkward by March if it was not the right call for your hair or your routine.

So before you commit, ask yourself what you actually want. Do you want a genuinely different look, or do you want to feel different and hair is the nearest lever to pull? Both are fine, but they lead to very different appointments.

What your hair can actually take right now

Your hair has a history, and it matters. If you have been using box dye, home henna, or a lot of heat, that changes what is safe to do in one sitting. Going several shades lighter almost always means bleach, and bleach on already stressed hair is how you end up with breakage instead of the balayage you saw on Pinterest.

I would rather give you the honest version at the start. Sometimes a big change is a plan across two or three appointments, not one. The American Academy of Dermatology guidance on healthy hair backs this up: less heat, regular conditioning, and a bit of patience protect the hair while you make the change.

Upkeep is the real decision

The colour is the fun part. The upkeep is the part that decides whether you still love it in six months. A full head of foils or a big colour change looks incredible on day one and needs a plan for regrowth, toning, and the right products at home.

Balayage is popular here for a reason. It grows out softly and is kinder on your diary and your budget. A full balayage with us is £70 to £85, a half is £55 to £65, and a toner refresh to keep it looking expensive is £35 to £40. A block of foils sits in a similar range but usually needs topping up more often. If low maintenance matters to you, say so at the start and we will steer the look that way.

Book a consultation before you book the change

This is the step people skip and then regret. A consultation is a proper chat before your appointment where we look at your hair in daylight, talk through what you want, and I tell you honestly what is realistic and how many visits it will take. It is also when we do a patch test if you are trying a new colour, which needs to happen at least 48 hours before we colour you.

Bring pictures. Three you love and one you hate tells me more than a paragraph of description, because the thing you are avoiding is often the clearest signal of all. Screenshots on your phone are perfect, and it is completely fine to change your mind once we have talked it through.

Ready when you are

So if new year new hair is on your mind, start with the conversation rather than the big change. You can see our full colour and styling options on our services page, and once you know what you want, we will get you in with the right stylist for it.

To book a consultation, call us on 01582 730381 or book online. We are at Shop 660, Jansel House, Hitchin Road, Stopsley, Luton, open Tuesday to Saturday. Come in, tell us what you are thinking, and we will build a plan that still looks good long after the new year buzz has worn off.
