Will colour damage my hair? What modern colour actually does

Yes, colour changes your hair, but on healthy hair that change is small and easily managed. Whether colour will damage your hair depends almost entirely on how much lift you are asking for. A tint that goes darker or covers grey sits in the hair and does very little. Lightening is bleach, and bleach removes something that does not come back.

What colour actually does inside the hair

Every permanent colour works by opening the cuticle, the overlapping outer layer that lies flat when hair is in good condition. The colour molecules go in underneath, the cuticle closes again, and some of that flattening is never quite as tight as it was. Research comparing hair after chemical treatment looked at hair under an electron microscope after colouring and found measurable damage to the cuticle and cortex, with the amount depending on hair type. White European hair was the most affected by colouring and African hair the most resistant. That study did not test bleach, so the tint versus bleach picture below is what we see in the chair rather than a lab finding.

That sounds alarming written down. In practice, a woman coming in every eight weeks for a root tint has hair that behaves normally, holds a curl, and grows at the same rate as anyone else. The damage people picture when they ask me this question is bleach damage, and bleach is a different job.

Tint, toner and gloss: the gentle end of the menu

If you are going darker, matching your natural depth, or covering grey, you are depositing colour rather than removing it. There is no lift involved, so there is very little to worry about. A full tint is £50 to £55 with us, a root tint £40 to £47.

Toners and glosses sit lower still. A toner is £35 to £40 on its own, or £20 added to another service, and it mostly sits on the surface adjusting tone. I have clients who have been toning every six weeks for years with hair in better condition than people who never colour at all, because they are in the chair regularly and we catch problems early.

Lightening is where the real risk sits

Going lighter means taking pigment out, and the only thing that does that is bleach. Bleach swells the hair, lifts the cuticle properly, and breaks down the pigment inside. On strong hair with no previous colour, that is a controlled process. On hair that has been bleached before, box dyed, or heat styled daily, it becomes a calculation.

This is why Sabrina, Sheree and I will not promise you a shade before we have looked at your hair and felt it wet. Elasticity tells us what is left inside the strand. A full head of foils or a full balayage is £70 to £85, a half head £55 to £65, and on compromised hair we will often book the half and build up over two sessions rather than take everything in one go.

How we keep the damage down in the salon

Bond builders go into the lightener rather than being sold to you afterwards as a miracle. They protect the internal links in the hair while the bleach works. We also keep bleach off the scalp where we can, use a lower developer over a longer time on fragile hair, and check the hair physically as it processes rather than trusting a timer.

The other part happens 48 hours before you arrive. We patch test every colour client, every time, because a reaction to hair dye is an allergy rather than damage and it can appear in someone who has coloured for twenty years.
