Your Hair Feels Like Straw. Here Is Why and What to Do.

You know the feeling. Your hair is dry, rough, tangly, and no amount of conditioner seems to fix it. It snaps when you brush it. It looks dull no matter what you do.
There is always a reason. Here are the most common ones I see.
Heat Damage
Straighteners every day. Curling tongs on full heat. Blow drying without any protection. Heat opens up the hair cuticle and eventually it stops closing again. That is when hair starts feeling rough and looking frizzy.
Fix: use heat protectant every single time. Turn the temperature down. If your straighteners go to 230 degrees, you probably do not need to go past 180. Give your hair a break from heat a couple of days a week.
Colour Damage
Every time hair is lightened, the cuticle is lifted. That is how the colour gets in. Done well, the damage is manageable. Done badly, or too often, the hair loses its structure and goes mushy when wet, crispy when dry.
Fix: if your colour is damaging your hair, something needs to change. Either the technique, the products, or the frequency. Talk to your colourist about it honestly. A good one will adapt.
Wrong Products
Cheap shampoo strips oils from your hair. Silicone-heavy conditioners coat the hair without actually moisturising it. Over time you get this weird combination of hair that looks greasy at the roots but feels dry at the ends.
Fix: invest in one good shampoo and one good conditioner that match your hair type. You do not need ten products. You need two good ones.
Hard Water
Luton has hard water. That means mineral build-up on your hair over time. It makes hair feel rough, look dull, and it can even affect how colour takes. A lot of people do not realise this is a factor.
Fix: a clarifying shampoo once a fortnight strips the mineral build-up. Your regular shampoo will not do this on its own.
What We Can Do
If your hair is in a bad way, come in and let us look at it. We can recommend the right treatment, whether that is a deep conditioning treatment in the salon, a product change at home, or adjusting how we approach your colour going forward.
Straw hair is fixable. It just needs someone to figure out what is causing it and address that, not just keep piling on conditioner.
