Nano tape or weft? How to pick the right extensions

Nano, tape and weft extensions all add length and thickness but they fit differently, last different lengths of time, and suit different kinds of hair. Nano rings suit fine hair best, tape is the quickest to fit, and weft gives the most volume for thicker hair. Cost usually goes up in that order too.
The short version
Nano rings sit flattest and are best for fine or short hair, £55 per hour.
Tape extensions are the quickest to fit and feel light, £60 to £70 per hour.
Wefts give the most volume and last the longest between fittings, £70 to £80 per hour.
All three need moving every 6 to 10 weeks as your real hair grows.
A free consultation tells you which method your hair can actually take.
Nano ring extensions
Nano rings are the smallest of the bead methods. Each strand of extension hair is fitted through a tiny copper ring and clamped flat against your own hair. No glue, no heat, no chemicals. They are the gentlest option we fit in the salon and the most discreet, which is why I send most fine-haired clients down this route.
A full head takes around three to four hours in my chair and the fitting starts at £55 per hour. Pricing scales with how many strands your hair needs. Some clients only want a few to add density at the sides, others want a full head for length.
The trade-off is upkeep. Nanos need moving every six to eight weeks because the rings sit close to the scalp and start to grow out fast. Push past ten weeks and the strands can start tangling at the root.
Tape extensions
Tape-ins are exactly what they sound like. Thin strips of extension hair with a medical-grade adhesive that sandwich a section of your own hair between two pieces. They lay flat against the head so there is no bump, which means they sit beautifully under fine to medium hair.
Fitting is fast. A full head usually takes around two hours and tapes are £60 to £70 per hour, so for many clients this comes out cheapest in total time. They are also the most comfortable for the first 48 hours, no real bedding-in period.
The catch is they have a slightly shorter window before the move-up. Six to eight weeks is the rule and you cannot use heavy oils near the bond. Coconut oil at the root will weaken the tape. Lightweight conditioner from mid-length to ends only.
Weft extensions
Wefts are long strips of hair sewn onto a thin track. We fit them by creating a row of micro-beads across the scalp and sewing the weft onto those beads. The end result is dense, secure and easy to brush like one piece of hair.
This is the method I recommend for clients with thick or coarse hair who want serious volume or major length. It takes three to four hours and runs £70 to £80 per hour, so it is the priciest of the three. But it lasts the longest, eight to ten weeks comfortably between move-ups, and the volume you get for the money is hard to beat.
Wefts also handle texture well. Curly, wavy, afro-textured hair, they sit and move naturally.
Which is right for you
Honest answer, it depends on your hair, not your preference. I have had clients walk in asking for tapes and leave booked in for nanos because their hair was too fine to safely hold the bonds. The wrong method on the wrong hair is how people end up with breakage, and I would rather lose the booking than fit something that damages your hair.
A few rough rules. Fine or short hair, nanos. Medium hair, short on time, tapes. Thick hair, want maximum length and volume, weft. If you have had bleach damage we look at all three carefully and might delay until your hair is stronger. The NHS guidance on hair loss is worth a read if you have noticed thinning before booking, because extensions can mask thinning but should not be fitted over actively shedding hair.
At the fitting and after
Plan for a half-day at the salon for a full head. Wash your hair the morning of, or the day before, with clarifying shampoo and no conditioner, so the bonds grip cleanly. We send everyone home with a soft-bristle extension brush and a leave-in spray. Sleep with hair in a loose plait or low ponytail. That alone doubles how long the hair looks fresh.
Move-ups are quicker than the original fit, usually an hour to an hour and a half. Keep the appointment on time. Letting them grow out long causes matting at the root, which means cutting strands out, and that costs you the lifespan of the hair.
