Will extensions damage my hair? It depends.

Extensions do not have to damage your hair, but they can if they are fitted badly, left in too long, or never looked after properly. Done well, by someone who knows what they are doing, your own hair stays healthy underneath them. Nearly every horror story I hear comes down to one of those three things, not the extensions themselves.

The short version

Good extensions, fitted properly, do not damage healthy hair.

Most damage comes from too much weight on fine hair.

Leaving them in past the move-up date is the biggest culprit.

Traction alopecia happens when hair is pulled too tight for too long.

Aftercare and regular maintenance keep your own hair healthy underneath.

What actually causes the damage

Extensions themselves do not wreck your hair. The problems start when the method does not match your hair, or when they are left in long past the point they should have been moved.

Too much weight is the main one. If your hair is fine and someone loads in a heavy set of wefts, the tension pulls on the roots every time you move your head. Over weeks that constant pull thins the hair at the temples and hairline. Left at the wrong tension for long enough it leads to traction alopecia, which is hair loss caused by pulling.

The other big one is neglect. Tape and bonds need moving up as your hair grows. Leave them and they tangle at the root, matting your own hair around the join. That is when the breakage comes out.

How we fit extensions to protect your hair

It starts with an honest look at your hair. Before anyone books in, one of the girls checks how much your hair can actually carry. If your hair is too fine for a full head of weft, I would rather tell you than fit something that pulls.

We match the method to your hair. Nano rings (£55 an hour) suit finer hair because each bead holds only a few strands, so the weight spreads out. Tape (£60 to £70 an hour) sits flat and is gentle when it is maintained. Weft (£70 to £80 an hour) gives the most volume but needs enough natural hair to anchor to.

Tension matters more than anything. Fitted right, you should not feel them pulling once you leave the chair. If your scalp is sore or tight that evening, that is not normal and you should ring us.

The aftercare that keeps your hair healthy

This is the part people skip, and it is where most of the damage happens at home. Brush from the ends up with a proper extension brush, holding the root so you are not dragging on the bonds.

Tie your hair back loosely before bed, ideally in a plait, so it does not tangle while you sleep. Keep heat off the bonds and use a heat protector. A sulphate-free shampoo stops tape and bonds slipping early.

Book your maintenance on time. Tape usually needs moving every six to eight weeks, bonds and nanos a little longer depending on your growth. Stretching it out to save money is a false economy, because that is when the matting and breakage start.

When extensions are not right for you

Sometimes the honest answer is not yet. If your hair is halfway through growing out a bleach job, or it is already snapping off, adding extensions on top makes it worse, not better.

If you are shedding more than usual, or you have noticed thinning at the hairline, get that looked at before you think about extensions. A scalp under stress does not need extra weight on it. We would rather get your own hair healthy first.

So, will they damage your hair?

Not if they are fitted to suit your hair, kept maintained, and looked after at home. The clients whose hair stays in great condition are the ones who come back for their move-ups and do the five minutes of aftercare a day.

If you are thinking about it and not sure your hair is up to it, come in for a consultation and we will tell you straight. Ring us on 01582 730381 or book online, and we will have a proper look before anyone fits a thing.
