The Salon Hair Products We Actually Use, and Why

Clients ask me all the time what is in the bottles on my trolley, and whether the expensive stuff is really worth it. Some of what we use is the big names you would expect. A lot of it we chose because it does one job well and does not cost you a fortune to keep up at home. Here are the salon hair products we actually reach for at The Hair Collective, and the honest reason behind each one.
The short version
We colour with Wella Professionals because the tone holds and stays consistent.
Olaplex and K18 are our two bond repairers, used for different jobs.
We patch test every new colour client. Hair dye allergies are real.
Most of what we sell for home use costs under twenty pounds.
We skip coconut oil. It coats the hair, it does not repair it.
The salon hair products on my colour trolley
Our colour is Wella Professionals, top to bottom. I have used a lot of brands over the years and Wella is the one I trust to give me the same result on a Tuesday as it does on a Saturday. Consistency matters more than anything when you are mixing a tint or a toner, because your client is trusting you to match what you did last time.
All four of the girls, Ashleigh, Keira, Sabrina and Shree, work off the same line, so you get the same standard whoever is in your chair. That is on purpose. It means a colour started by one of us can be carried on by another without the result jumping around.
Toner is the bit clients rarely ask about but always notice. It is what takes a fresh set of foils from yellow to the soft, expensive looking blonde you actually wanted. A toner with us is £35 to £40 on its own, or £20 as an add on to a colour. It washes out over a few weeks, which is why your blonde can start to look brassy, and a toner refresh is the cheapest way to keep your colour looking sharp.
Olaplex and K18: what each one actually does
These two get talked about like magic. They are not magic, but they do real work, and we use both for different reasons. Olaplex goes in during a colour or lightening service. It rebuilds the bonds that bleach breaks, so your hair comes out feeling like hair and not like straw.
K18 is our leave in repair mask, the one we reach for when hair is already damaged from heat or a home bleach job. You put it on damp hair, leave it four minutes, and you do not rinse it out. It is not cheap, but a tube lasts months because you use a tiny amount. I would rather sell you one good mask than five products that do nothing.
Before any colour, we patch test
This is not a product but it is the most important thing on my trolley. We patch test every new colour client at least 48 hours before the appointment. Hair dye allergies are real and they can be serious, so this is not a step we skip to save time, no matter how keen you are to get booked in.
What we tell you to buy for home
Here is the honest part. Most of what keeps your hair healthy at home is not expensive. A decent sulphate free shampoo, a conditioner you actually use, and a heat protectant before you go near your straighteners will do more than any miracle in a jar. Even the dermatologists at the American Academy of Dermatology say the basics, gentle washing, conditioning, and easing off the heat, matter more than any single product.
Most of what we sell to take home is under twenty pounds. If a member of the team recommends something, it is because we have seen it work on real clients, not because there is a target on it. You will never get a hard sell in my salon.
The one thing we do not bother with
Coconut oil. I know it is all over the internet. It coats the hair and makes it feel soft for a day, but it does not repair anything, and on coloured hair it can actually dull your tone and make your next appointment harder. If your hair is dry, you want moisture and protein that absorbs into the hair, not an oil that just sits on top.
If you want to know exactly what we would use on your hair, the best thing is to come in for a chat. The girls are always happy to talk you through it, with no pressure to buy anything. Give us a ring on 01582 730381 or book online and we will sort you out.
